Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in your choice of color
- Crochet hook (size G/4mm or size appropriate for your yarn)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Start with a Magic Ring:
- Begin by making a magic ring. To do this, hold the tail end of the yarn between your thumb and middle finger. Wrap the working end of the yarn around your index and middle fingers to create a loop. Insert your hook under the first strand of yarn, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Chain 1 to secure the ring.
- Crochet the Base:
- Round 1: Work 8 single crochet (sc) stitches into the magic ring. Pull the tail end of the yarn to close the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc to complete the round. (8 sts)
- Increase for the Sides:
- Round 2: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 2 sc in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. (16 sts)
- Crochet the Sides:
- Rounds 3-5: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. (16 sts per round)
- Repeat Round 3 for a total of 3 rounds.
- Finish Off:
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 6 inches. Fasten off by pulling the yarn through the loop on your hook and pulling tight to secure.
- Weave in Ends:
- Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends of the yarn to secure them and hide them within the stitches.
- Optional Embellishments:
- If you want to add a decorative edge, you can work a round of slip stitches, picots, or another decorative stitch around the outer edge of the coaster.
- Blocking (Optional):
- You can lightly block your coaster by wetting it and pinning it into shape on a flat surface. Allow it to dry completely before using.
