Knitting a pair of high socks or tights for babies aged 0-3 months can be a lovely project. Here's a basic pattern to get you started:

Materials Needed:

  • Fingering weight or baby yarn in your preferred color
  • Knitting needles appropriate for your yarn (size US 1-3 / 2.25-3.25mm)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Instructions:

Sock/Tights:

  1. Cuff:

    • Cast on 36 stitches (adjust number of stitches for larger or smaller sizes).
    • Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1 inch (2.5 cm) or desired length.
  2. Leg:

    • Knit every row in stockinette stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side) until the leg measures approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) from the top of the cuff, or desired length.
  3. Heel Flap:

    • Divide the stitches in half to work the heel flap. For example, if you cast on 36 stitches, work the heel flap over 18 stitches.
    • Turn your work, then purl across the first 18 stitches.
    • Turn your work again, then knit across those same 18 stitches.
    • Repeat these two rows (purl row, knit row) until the heel flap measures about 1.5 inches (4 cm), ending with a purl row.
  4. Heel Turn:

    • Row 1: (RS) Slip 1, knit 11, ssk, k1, turn.
    • Row 2: (WS) Slip 1, purl 5, p2tog, p1, turn.
    • Row 3: Slip 1, knit to 1 stitch before the gap, ssk (this stitch is one stitch before the gap), k1, turn.
    • Row 4: Slip 1, purl to 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog (this stitch is one stitch before the gap), p1, turn.
    • Repeat Rows 3-4 until all heel stitches have been worked, ending with a purl row.
  5. Gusset:

    • With the RS facing, pick up and knit stitches along the side of the heel flap. For example, pick up and knit 9 stitches.
    • Knit across the stitches on the needle.
    • Pick up and knit stitches along the other side of the heel flap (the same number as you picked up on the first side).
    • Knit across half of the stitches from the leg.
    • Now you should have half the stitches on one needle (instep stitches) and half on another needle (sole stitches).
  6. Foot:

    • Knit every round until the foot measures approximately 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) from the back of the heel, or desired length.
  7. Toe:

    • Round 1: Needle 1: Knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Needle 2: K1, ssk, knit to end of needle. Needle 3: Knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Needle 4: K1, ssk, knit to end of needle.
    • Round 2: Knit all stitches.
    • Repeat Rounds 1-2 until 8 stitches remain.
    • Cut yarn, leaving a tail. Use a yarn needle to draw the tail through the remaining stitches, pull tight to close the toe, and weave in the ends.
  8. Finishing:

    • Repeat steps 1-7 for the second sock/tight.

And there you have it! A basic pattern for knitting high socks or tights for babies aged 0-3 months. Adjustments can be made for larger or smaller sizes as needed. Enjoy knitting these adorable garments for the little ones!
